Introduction

Seminars are based on any current trend within the 3 options, must be linked to the student’s 500 Level Project and forms part of the Literature review of that Project. Seminars also have a scope which covers current and future trends, importance, limitations as well as pertinent underlying technologies in that area. Lastly, Seminars are a mandatory component of the curriculum for 500 Level Students.

Components of a seminar


There are two (2) basic components of a seminar:


*      Seminar Report
*      Seminar Slide Presentation

What is a Seminar Report?

A seminar report is:
  • A hard copy document.
  • Must be signed by the Supervisor.
  • Must be bound (spiral or slide).
  • Must be in chapters.

Sections of a Seminar Report

There are three (3) basic sections of every seminar report. They include:

1.    Preliminary Pages


This section consists of the following pages:

•    Cover Page
•    Abstract
•    Certification Page
•    Dedication
•    Acknowledgements
•    Table of Contents
•    List of Tables
•    List of Figures


2.    Main Pages: 


This section consists of the following pages:

•    Chapter 1- Introduction
•    Chapter 2- Literature Review
•    Chapter 3- Seminar Topic
•    Chapter 4- Conclusion

3.    Post Pages: 

This section contains your seminar reference pages

SEMINAR SLIDES

These slides are:

*      Developed from the Seminar Report.
*      A focused summary.
*      Prepared in both soft and hard copies.

Slide Preparation Rules

Professional soft and hard copy presentation slides must conform to the following rules:

*     Hard copy version printed on A4 paper with landscape orientation.

*     Use bullets (any style), tables, figures & fewer words.

*     Tables & figures in the slides should retain the same titling & numbering as in the Seminar Report for ease of location by the panelists.

*     Legible font type & size.

*     No slide animation should be used except where critical.

*     All the slides should be numbered except for the Cover Page.

Components of Presentation Slides

For a presentation to be concise and professional, it must contain the following components or pages:

*      Cover Page
*      Outline
*      Introduction
*      Literature Review
*      Seminar Topic
*      Importance/Advantages/ Benefits
*      Disadvantages/ Limitations
*      Mitigation
*      Conclusion
*      Recommendation
*      Thank you

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR A PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION

*      Meet your Supervisor regularly.
*      Effect all corrections given.
*      Read widely & thoroughly. Be familiar with the area.
*      Rehearse by yourself & with colleagues.
*      Pace & time yourself.
*      Dress smartly.
*      Make eye contact with panellists.
*      Composed gestures.

CONCLUSION

*      The Seminar is mandatory for all 500L students.
*      It comprises the Report and Slide Presentation.
*      Both must be reviewed and approved by your supervisor.
